What is a tula?

A tula is a type of traditional woven carrier used by various Indigenous cultures in Mexico and Central America to carry children and goods. Typically made from brightly colored woven fabric, a tula features a rectangular panel with straps that cross over and tie at the wearer's back and waist. The design allows for an even distribution of weight, making it comfortable to carry heavy loads for extended periods of time. The use of tulas dates back centuries and is still popular among many Indigenous communities today. They are also increasingly used by parents who practice baby-wearing as a way to carry their infants and toddlers.
